Recommended Network Installation
When installing a network connection from outdoor equipment to your LAN, it is advisable to use single-mode fiber optic cable. This eliminates any direct electrical path and greatly reduces the risk of a lightning strike at the outdoor equipment propagating into and damaging network equipment inside the building. Equipment vendors should recommend this method.
Lightning is unpredictable and does not always follow expected paths. It can cause damage at unexpected points in a circuit, and in some cases equipment at the entry point may remain unaffected while downstream devices are damaged. I have actually seen this happen.
To implement a fiber link, if your network switches do not have SFP ports, you will need two media converters and a fiber cable between them. All components must match — the converters and the cable must all be single-mode and use compatible interfaces.
All network equipment should be powered by a quality UPS, such as those from APC. The UPS and connected equipment must be properly grounded and supplied from a dedicated branch circuit that does not serve inductive loads such as HVAC systems, dehumidifiers, refrigeration units, or shop tools.
